As a small business owner, you’re (hopefully) passionate about the work you do, which means you actually want to do the work.
But what happens when you’ve got too many enquiries or projects on the go, and you can’t grow any more?
Here are some strategies to help you if you’re ready to start earning more income for your small business without working more hours.
Raise your prices
A simple but effective fix.
If you’ve got too much work on and not enough time in the day, you need to raise your prices.
You can either do this incrementally (e.g. each new client you get, raise the price by 5-10%) or you could do it in waves (e.g. quarterly).
Don’t be scared of higher prices, either. This signals value.
For example ~ I have an Etsy shop. I listed a printable for 99p and it just wasn’t selling. In a Rory Sutherland moment (his book, Alchemy, is fantastic for marketing advice), I upped the price to £2.79. It now gets regular purchases. Higher price signals value.
Consider affiliate marketing
If you’ve got steady traffic to your website and social media, could you think about earning from affiliate marketing?
For example, if you’re a wedding planner, you could get an affiliate deal with a brand that your clients care about like a wedding gifting platform or wedding insurance?
That way you can earn regular £££ from creating a bit of content.
If you start to build your audience, you may then be able to consider brand deals too!
Develop a course or digital product
Can you sell your expertise in a course or digital product? Here’s just a few ideas for different industries:
- Gardeners -> an e-book or digital download on how to garden for wildlife and with the seasons
- Wedding suppliers -> a wedding planning digital download
- Restaurants/cafes/food and drink -> a mini course on how to cook some of your best-selling dishes at home
- Accommodation -> a digital travel planner
- Care services -> a selection of digital documents to help care planning or a course on how to care for a loved one
Outsource the things you don’t enjoy or hire fractional support
Can you get some help with certain tasks?
Outsourcing can sometimes feel a bit removed or scary. But there are plenty of freelancers out there who are ready to help you grow your business in a way that works for you (psst… I’m one of them -> view the services I offer here)
Whether it’s a bit of support with admin, or a specific skill, consider getting a bit of help with the tasks you don’t enjoy. That way you can focus on the bits of your business that you love.
